First Wozzeck at the Greek National Opera!

Following the great success of Elektra and Lady Macbeth of the Mtsensk District, Vassilis Christopoulos has been invited back to the Greek National Opera to conduct Wozzeck in a stellar production, featuring Tassis Christoyannis and Nadine Lehner in the main roles under the stage direction of celebrated French director Olivier Py. The premiere on 19 January 2020 will be the first performance of Wozzeck in the history of the Greek National Opera! You can find more information and buy tickets here.

 

Update: Shostakovitch's Lady Macbeth of the Mtsensk District in Athens

Following the huge success of Elektra, the Greek National Opera invited Vassilis Christopoulos to conduct a new production of Shostakovitch's Lady Macbeth of the Mtsensk District. French star actress Fanny Ardant will direct, bringing with her the distinguished set designer Tobias Hoheisel as well as four times Academy Award winner Milena Canonero for the costumes. Return to the Athens State Orchestra

After three years, Vassilis Christopoulos will conduct the Athens State Orchestra again on 1 March at the Megaron of Music in Athens. On the programme: "Jonathan's journey", a new piece by Christos Papageorgiou, Brahms' Violin Concerto with young Czech violinist Jan Mrácek, and Richard Strauss' famous symphonic poem "Thus spake Zarathustra". Guest on "Doppelkopf"

Vassilis Christopoulos' appearance as guest on the renowned radio show "Doppelkopf" was broadcast on 4 December 2018 by HR2 Kultur, the cultural radio station of the State of Hesse. The show is now available as a podcast. To listen to it (in German) click here.

 

New Elektra

Following her accident, Iréne Theorin has unfortunately had to cancel her participation as Elektra in the Greek National Opera's inaugural production at the Stavros Niarchos Foundation Cultural Centre. The GNO and Vassilis Christopoulos personally are grateful to Sabine Hogrefe who has gracioucly and gracefully come to the rescue!

 

Inauguration of the new Greek National Opera!

Vassilis Christopoulos has been invited to conduct the Greek National Opera’s opening production at the Stavros Niarchos Foundation Cultural Centre in Athens: “Elektra” by Richard Strauss is scheduled to première on 15 October. The Centre, designed by star-architect Renzo Piano, includes a park, will house the National Library of Greece and will become the National Opera's new home.

 

Live broadcast from Brussels

Vassilis' concert on 23 January with the Flanders Symphony Orchestra featuring Nikolai Demidenko as a soloist will be broadcast live from the Centre for Fine Arts in Brussels on Klara Radio; you can listen to it here at 20:00 CET on 23 January.

A musically exciting autumn

Following the success of Richard Strauss’ Elektra, Vassilis Christopoulos has been invited back to the Hessisches Staatstheater Wiesbaden for a revival of Die Frau ohne Schatten by the same composer next autumn; he will also return to the Queensland Symphony Orchestra together with Nikolai Demidenko to complete their cycle of all piano concertos by Beethoven. On 20 October he will conduct a French programme with the Mozarteumorchester in Salzburg; and on 16 November he will give his début with the Staatsorchester Kassel.

 

Professorship in Frankfurt for Vassilis Christopoulos!

Vassilis Christopoulos has been appointed Professor for Orchestra Conducting at the Academy of Music and Performing Arts in Frankfurt. He will officially assume his duties at the beginning of next semester in October 2016.
